J. Murray Barbour, Tuning and Temperament, 1951, Michigan State College Press, East Lansing, MI. A long-time standard reference in the field of intonational theory.

Arthur H. Benade, Fundamentals of Musical Acoustics, 1976, revised 1990, Dover, New York. An extremely valuable, if fairly demanding and at times idiosyncratic, overview of the topic.

Arthur H. Benade, Horns, Strings & Harmony, 1960, Doubleday, New York. Simpler and more accessible than the previous listing by the same author.

David Doty, The Just Intonation Primer, 1993, The Just Intonation Network, 535 Stevensen St., San Francisco, CA 94013. This is the place to start for tuning theory if your interest is in just tunings rather than equal temperaments or other approaches.

Neville H. Fletcher and Thomas D. Rossing, The Physics of Musical Instruments, 1991, Springer-Verlag, New York. Highly technical extremely demanding mathematics.

Donald Hall, Musical Acoustics: An Introduction, 2nd Edition, 1991, Brooks-Cole Pub. Co., Pacific Grove, CA. Designed as a college level textbook. Accessible, lucid, and practical throughout.

Hermann Helmholtz, On the Sensations of Tone, 1954, Dover Publications, New York. Helmholtz’ pioneering study of musical acoustics, first published in 1885, is still read as a foundational text today.
